Petition to save live music in Melbourne

Posted by Paddy On February 7, 2010

It’s not that I think this will help a whole lot. Governments like to stamp their feet and attempt to force people to “respect their authoritaaaaaaaaay”, especially socialist ones.

However, my hope is that some entrepreneurs and hoteliers will see that people want more live venues and make more of an effort to accommodate.

Go forth, sign the petition, no harm can come from it.

For what it’s worth, the law in question is a turkey and seriously needs to be overthrown. However I suspect the best one can hope for in that particular matter, is some minor “tweaking” of it. The net result of said “tweaking” will be pretty much the same, except both parties, Government and music lovers, can go away secure in the notion that they accomplished something.

In all likelihood what will be accomplished is more expensive admission prices, even grottier live venues and probably less money for the band.

Our music scene is busting at the seams with world class bands slogging it out for next to nothing, what is desperately needed is for private enterprise to step forward and provide quality venues, perhaps in the outer suburbs where such draconian laws are not so strictly applied. The result of this would be, more venues with more people able to access the bands. A win win situation.
