Doc Neeson in a country band!!!???

Posted by Paddy On January - 31 - 2010

Living legend, front man extraordinaire and survivor Doc “Bernard” Neeson of the Angels, is playing guitar in a country tinged band! I kid you not!

Here is the evidence….

Strange things afoot over the western plains.

‘Utes in the Paddock’ is an unusual idea; Holden utes (yes, only Holdens) that have been turned into sculptures by well known sculptors and placed in a paddock outside of Condoblin NSW. The aim is to help charities involved in mental health work in western NSW, and also promote tourism into the area. It’s the brainchild of graziers Graham and Jana Pickles, owners of Burrawang Station.

Jim and sculptor Stephen Coburn (son of artist John Coburn and original member of Mental as Anything) have joined forces for the project to make an 8m high sculpture of a red kangaroo called ‘Utezilla’, using a Holden FE ute.

They have also made a CD to promote the idea caled ‘Utes in The Paddock’. Featuring original new songs by Jim, Doc Neeson from the Angels, Neil Murray, Stephen Coburn, Alan Healy, Hellen Rose and the Utezillas…the houseband featuring Jim, Stephen, Bird from the Mentals on drums and Trent Williamson from The Family Dog on harmonica/jawharp.

The CD is now available for order on this site through Jim’s label Reverberama Records. Funds are directed towards mental health work in western NSW.

The video above shows a temporary band named in honor of the ‘Utezilla” creation at the opening of the Utes in the Paddock attraction.

Heartless Vendetta new song up now!

Posted by Paddy On January - 31 - 2010

Frankston band Heartless Vendetta have finally unleashed their brand new song, ‘Lose Your Mind” from their debut album “Epidemic” due out soon.

Initial thoughts…It’s a tougher sound than their previous samples, very guitar driven, huge drum sound. Quite likely not mainstream radio friendly (but then again, mainstream wasn’t going to play it anyway, they are too busy still playing Pink). Strong vocals, rousing chorus, all in all an extremely professional effort for a debut album.

Hear it from their Reverbnation profile below. (click on “songs”. Facebook readers will have to click on “view original post”).

Jaxonville

Posted by Paddy On January - 27 - 2010

Jaxonville are are twins Rachael & Rebecca Jackson, they sing a melodious folksy country music thats difficult not to enjoy.

From their website

Rachael started playing trombone, then learned guitar. She is accomplished in various styles on guitar from classical, country, pop, folk, and bluegrass. Rachael’s expressive countenance and readiness to meet and greet fans at shows is a huge plus after hearing her crisp clear powerful lead voice belt out the lyrics to the various styles Jaxonville performs. Together she and her twin sister Rebecca unite their vocals as one on delicate as well as aggressive harmonies. Though not the MC for the band, Rachael has a radiant and magnetic personality who smiles with her eyes.

Rebecca is MC for the Jaxonville band. Rebecca learned to play classical violin while growing up. Later she cultivated her styles to include country, pop, folk, and bluegrass, and Irish styles. She is accomplished on guitar and plays mandolin as well. Rebecca has that lower range, but still powerful with a certain mellow sound that blends beautifully in harmony with Rachael’s lead voice. You can find at shows that Rebecca is eager to meet fans and always ready to encourage a young budding musician.

Keep an eye out for them, they are sure to be huge in country music circles.

Here they are singing “One More Reason”.

Interview with Tim Agius of The Red Jane Show

Posted by Paddy On January - 25 - 2010

The Red Jane Show have captured my attention since the first time I stumbled across their myspace page. Their look is attention grabbing to say the least, but it is their sound that cements the band as a truly serious one to watch.

With a huge multi layered sound harking back to the glory days of Queen, conceptual live shows and talent to spare, The Red Jane Show are out to succeed.

I was stoked when Tim Agius (Bass/vocals) agreed to take part in the first ever interview conducted specifically for this site. He answered some of the personal queries I had as well as some general band questions, and even corrected some misconceptions.

Here we go….

O.A.M…Thank you Tim for taking the time to answer a few questions about The Red Jane Show, and for being the very first interview on the Only Australian Music website.

First off, is Elysia Agius of the all girl group Tantalum any relation? If so, there must be a lot of talent floating around in your family.

Tim…Yes, Elysia is a cousin of myself and Daniel. I can still re-call her singing ‘Mamma Mia’ whilst we pretend to play on toy guitars when we were about 6 or 7!

O.A.M…Did you guys have a musical upbringing, or did you take it upon yourselves?

Tim…Myself and Daniel’s dads and uncles have been musicians all of their lives, and still play in working bands to this day. So we’ve been influenced by them since a young age, particularly Daniel who has been playing since he was about 2! The rest of the band have been playing music since young ages as well, but don’t have as much of a family influence as myself and Daniel do. It’s really great having that musical bond between not only your friends and bandmates, but your uncles from the previous generation. There is no way we’d be where we are today without the support from our parents, driving us to gigs and buying us gear!

OAM…When The Red Jane Show performed on Australias Got Talent, your cousin Daniel played drums, keyboards and sang all at the same time, without missing a beat or losing a breath. As a music lover for many many years, I find that amazing, yet he made it look simple. How difficult is that to do? He must practice for hours on end, that’s some serious dedication there.

Tim…Daniel is an incredible talent. What he does is remarkable, particularly considering his age. Playing drums, keyboards and singing lead vocals all at once is clearly not an easy task, yet as you say he makes it look like any average Joe could do it. I can’t speak on behalf of him, but what you see is what you get. There is no hidden secrets that make it an easy task. Daniel simply has amazing co-ordination and musical abilities far beyond his years.

O.A.M…There has been some instability within the Red Jane Show recently, with the addition and disappearance of Melissa Jane, the rename to Dakota Drive and back again and the very recent addition of three new ladies, have things finally settled down?

Tim…Actually, Melissa Jane was at the time just a “stage name” for Alyssa, so really there has been no members leave, just the arrivals of Melanie and Jaqueline. It may seem like it, but I disagree on the “instability” comment. It was more so a time in which we had to change some things to determine how we wanted to present ourselves, what we wanted to achieve in music, and to sort out a few problems we were having in relation to being taken as a serious band and not a joke. The latter was an issue we were finding with the image, choreography, acting in between songs etc. At the time we thought it may be better to move The Red Jane Show into the cover industry, hence why we started Dakota Drive. However it just didn’t feel right. The Red Jane Show is where our passion lies. Therefore we’ve gone away, found the two new girls, improved the quality of the music and show, and altered the costumes to a more formal look and not over-the-top 80′s. We are confident there won’t be any more changes in the near future!

O.A.M…In relation to that last question, I am wondering if your intent is to build a stable performing band, or a loose collection of accompanying musicians revolving around you three guys, much like Australian blues band Chain and to a certain extent Rose Tattoo have done.

Tim…No, the intent is to definitely have a stable band with the current 6 members.

O.A.M…Your music is rich in melody and harmony, it harks back to the 70′s with the likes of Queen, Styx, Kansas ect, yet you guys are so young. Where does this “modern retro” lush sound come from? Was it parental guidance, classic rock radio or did you guys discover it for yourselves?

Tim…We feel we are largely influenced by a lot of the music of the 60′s/70′s/80′s, but we also listen to the current music and combine it all together. We discovered a lot of the olden day bands for ourselves, but ultimately it began in car rides with the radio tuned into Gold 104.3!! The longer we play together, the more “our sound” evolves through the experimentation of different sounds and playing styles.

O.A.M…The Red Jane Show is unashamedly a glam band. Australia has produced precious few successful glam bands, with the notable exception of Skyhooks and possibly Sherbet of course, how do you rate your chances?

Tim…We don’t see ourselves as “just another big hair band”. If we were the same as most of the glam bands from the 80′s, I wouldn’t gives ourselves much of a chance at all. But as we are glam with a greater depth, a unique, exciting stage show, and music with a solid rhythm section, 6-part harmonies, catchy melodies and overall just a “fat” sound, we are hopeful we can build up a fan base gradually and provide Australia with some great entertainment!

O.A.M…Tell me a little about the song writing process. Do you three guys all sit around working on songs, or does someone write one and the others join in and brush it up a little? I’m curious because from my point of view, your songs reflect a maturity both lyrically and musically far beyond your years. The songs sound so “huge”, so full. They sound like songs that a band with years of practice might produce.

Tim…There is no set process, it always happens differently. Often someone may have some ideas they present to the rest of the band. Other times a number of us may sit down together and try to write something from scratch. Sometimes it’ll begin with a keyboard melody, other times a guitar riff, and sometimes even a bass rhythm. But most generally the original ideas will be brought to a rehearsal by one person, and then expanded with the rest of us. Alyssa is a key part in the songwriting process as well as she plays keyboards and vocals. Melanie and Jaqueline are yet to be a part of it as they are only new, but I’m sure they will contribute in the not too distant future.

O.A.M…When can we expect an album?

Tim…That’s not something we’ve considered just yet. We need to build up a solid fan base and spend at least a year or two getting the name out further into the Melbourne scene, and possibly even interstate, before we will consider that. We have innovative dreams of recording an album which is a CD and DVD all in one due to the whole concept of the live show. We are currently in the process of recording several tracks at Airwaves Studio’s in Melbourne with producer Michael Zammit as demo’s.

O.A.M…And finally, what’s your favourite Australian song?

Tim…This is a very tough question! I can’t put my finger on one sole favourite, so a few of the personal bests are: Long way to the top (AC/DC), April Sun In Cuba (Dragon), Hot Chilli Woman (Noiseworks), Flame Trees (Cold Chisel) and Cry In Shame (Diesel).

O.A.M…Tim, thank you sincerely for taking the time to share a little about the band with me. I wish you all the success in the world. For what it’s worth, the era we live in can be gloomy at times, and to see a band of young talented musicians “giving it a go” having fun and adding colour to the world can be just what the doctor ordered.

Tim…Cheers!!

The Red Jane Show’s first incarnation.

With two of the three new ladies and a slightly less “over the top” look.
